Most of our programs are meant to the poor and needy. Applicants who wish to be considered for a grant may need to verify their financial eligibility. Currently we plan to use two ways to verify applicant’s financial eligibility

  1. Working with FreshEBT and other such organizations for a list of randomly generated EBT cardholders who, we know, meet the financial eligibility criteria. There is nothing for an applicant to do in this scenario unless they are randomly selected for a grant.
  2. We ask that you log into the EBT system using your ‘username’ and ‘password’. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE DO NOT SAVE OR EVEN SEE YOUR USER NAME AND PASSWORD. Once it is verified that you are a valid EBT cardholder, we request that you enter your name, address, and contact information so we may contact you in case you have been randomly selected for a grant

Question: How does the technology behind how the second way of financial eligibility works

Answer: Below is a step-by-step walk-through.

We are a thin passthrough layer on top of the existing EBT portals such as ConnectEBT.com or ebtEdge.com. When an applicant logs in with their EBT card username and password, our software initiates a request directly to the processor’s portal on the applicant’s behalf. Authentication is conducted through the same method used by the portal, which is often a username and password passed fully encrypted to the portal and back.

EBT card holder information (usernames, passwords, card numbers) is never stored on our servers. And we never collects PINs. Each request, initiated when the ‘submit eligibility’ button is clicked, fetches balance and transaction history one time each, mimicking the way an individual EBT cardholder uses the portal. If the login information is correct, balance and spending history is encrypted and then displayed in real-time for you to confirm that you are indeed the right person. We take data privacy very seriously, which is why we begin by taking a very conservative approach to the data we store. Personally identifying information cannot be hacked because it is never stored on our servers in the first place. While we do have access to aggregate and anonymized data, we never sell or share data with third parties EVER PERIOD. We have information in the format of “user id #12345 checked their balance, and it was $32, and their last transaction was at Joe’s Mart for $12 on March 7th.” We do this in order to verify an applicants financial eligibility and to ensure you are who you say you are

Client privacy is built into any software or partner we work with.

Our privacy policy reflects three key principles:

We do not sell data.

We never share or sell individual data with third parties. Anonymized and aggregated data is used to deliver and improve our services, application, and partner content. All data retention and use policies are laid out in our Privacy Policy, which all users agree to in order to begin applying for a grant. All data is encrypted in transit.

Data security is of utmost importance to us, not least because it is important to the clients we serve and our partners. Fresh EBT adopts modern software standards around security, including fully encrypting all communication end-to-end, bi-directionally through the Secure Socket Layer (SSL). Personal data stored on the clients’ device is also fully encrypted.

We do not store any sensitive or personally-identifying information used to access EBT portals.

Personal case information, like EBT card number, name, or date of birth, is never stored on our servers. Information required for clients to create an account or access their balance on the EBT portal is stored locally on their phones and fully encrypted. When they open the app to check their balance, the login credentials are sent to the EBT portal in fully encrypted communication. As such, no personal information can ever be compromised by our system.
